10 Useful Tips for XI R2 Migration
|
As more companies plan and start their migration to BusinessObjects XI R2, there has been a noticeable shift towards performing the majority of the work in-house. The main impetus for this approach is to reduce the cost of the migration and this can be achieved providing the project is planned and executed correctly.
The key to success is to make sure your BusinessObjects administrators are thoroughly knowledgeable on the new XI R2 architecture and tools. By knowing both the source and target environments, they can make informed and critical decisions regarding migration methodology, security model and report conversions or rewrites.
The actual migration tools, namely the Import Wizard and the Report Conversion tool, can be learned through training also, but this will be something that will only be useful for this one migration exercise. For this reason, many customers consider using a Certified Migration Specialist for a few days to perform the initial repository migration and set-up.

QUESTION:
When using Web Intelligence, I have noticed that when I develop more complex
reports, or when my queries are based on very large universes I occasionally run
out of Java Heap Memory. Is there a way to resolve this?
ANSWER:
While you should keep your universes and reports as simple and small as
possible, you do not always have a choice. The only option left may be to increase the Java Heap Size and hope it will be enough to cure the problem. The following steps describe how to adjust that parameter.

Crystal Reports Q&A
QUESTION:
When publishing a summary report to Enterprise using the Suppress Section feature the users think they can drill down on a report and expect to see details but do not. Is there anyway to turn off drill down when suppressing a section?
ANSWER:
No, but you can use the DrillDownGroupLevel function to alert your users that there are no details on the report to drill down on.

Xcelsius Dashboards with Connectivity
With the recent release of the new XI R2 Productivity Pack from Business Objects, there are now several viable methods for providing back-end connectivity, quickly and effectively, to the data in your data warehouses, data marts or production systems. Additionally, the new Live Office in XI R2 allows data content in both Crystal and Web Intelligence reports to be fed through Excel into Xcelsius. This includes utilizing parts, like crosstabs, directly from the reports. In addition, the new Query as a Web Service (QaaWS) option,
that is also available with the XI R2 Productivity Pack, provides a
functionality to directly access data through a BusinessObjects universe, using
a query panel, so that data can be retrieved real-time into any application,
such as Xcelsius, then can consume data through a web service. InfoBurst XDS provides another effective and scalable method for retrieving data directly from a raw data source or through a query in BusinessObjects, Web Intelligence or Crystal Reports and transforming it for direct usage within Xcelsius.
