InfoSol Ramps Up for an Exciting 2008 in the World of Business Intelligence

At the beginning of a New Year, it is usual to reflect on the events of the previous year as well as make predictions for the coming year.

For InfoSol, 2007 was a very exciting and successful year. Some of the highlights included:

  • Making the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies and ranked in the top 100 in Phoenix

  • Recording the most sales of the InfoBurst Report Distribution and Publishing solution than any previous year
  • Becoming a leading provider of developing and deploying data visualization and dashboard solutions using Xcelsius and InfoBurst-XDS
  • Celebrating our 10th Anniversary of incorporation

Predictions for the coming year are a little more difficult. It should certainly be both an interesting and exciting year in the world of Business Intelligence. With Oracle buying Hyperion, SAP buying Business Objects and IBM buying Cognos, the whole landscape of the Business Intelligence software space is changing. As these huge I.T. giants absorb these huge BI giants, InfoSol does not expect to see a lot of significant change in the BI strategy, direction and products of these “megacorps” in 2008.

That being said, new versions and functions already in process will roll out this year giving everyone plenty to smile about. Business Objects at their conference in November already released the new Crystal Reports 2008 and talked about new versions of XI and Xcelsius coming in 2008.

So what do we predict will happen in the world of Business Intelligence this year?

Here are a few of our main predictions:

  • Dashboards will become the primary interface of choice for Business Intelligence solutions
  • The emphasis of Business Intelligence will start to shift towards being more user centric and less data centric
  • The cost of Business Intelligence software will decline due to both competitive pressure from Microsoft and the opportunity to sell to a larger small business audience
  • Data Marts will flourish as the demand for effective BI solutions in small and medium-sized businesses booms.

InfoSol is definitely ramping up for what promises to be a banner year in the world of Business Intelligence. Along with our main 2008 predictions, we would like to share a few of our plans for the coming year (call them New Year’s resolutions). These include:

  • Launching InfoSol Canada
  • Expanding and re-modeling the InfoSol Training Facilities
  • Developing a brand new version of InfoBurst
  • Developing new Business Intelligence education and service offerings
  • Launching Paul Grill’s Business Intelligence BLOG

  • Developing new Business Intelligence turnkey applications
  • Revamping our Web Site and marketing collateral (note the new look of our Eye Bulletin)
  • Expanding and enhancing the InfoSol Business Intelligence Seminar-IBIS
(note dates and location announced in this editio
    n)
  • Expanding our Environmentally Friendly approach to all aspects of our business

…. and that’s just for starters. The good news about all our resolutions is that we have actually started them all so expect to see a lot of exciting announcements in your month Eye Bulletin – watch this space!

InfoSol wishes you all equal success with your 2008 resolutions and make sure to include one more:
‘Reading the InfoSol Eye Bulletin’.

May you all have a Happy and Prosperous 2008!

Ask the Expert - Your Business Intelligence Questions Answered

Xcelsius Q&A

QUESTION:
We are receiving numbers in both percentiles against the current year and in annual values. This results in our rows returning with the annual values from current year to previous years but we want our chart to appear with the previous years first. How can we turn these columns around easily in Xcelsius?

ANSWER:
The Index and Match functions are very versatile in Excel. By selecting just the item label rather than the row, you use Match to find the row number of the item and then use index to find the value associated with the row.

Crystal Reports Q&A

QUESTION:
I have a report that displays the number of minutes that elapsed between two dates, but I want to show it in hours and then minutes. Is there a built in function to do this?

ANSWER:
No, there is no built in function to do this for you, but the good news is that you can create a simple formula that will calculate and display the hours and minutes for you
.
