Thoth is credited by the Egyptians as the author of
all works of science, religion, philosophy, and magic. The Greeks further
declared him the inventor of astronomy, astrology, the science of numbers,
mathematics, geometry, land surveying, medicine, botany, theology, civilized
government, the alphabet, reading, writing, and oratory. They further
claimed he was the true author of every work of every branch of knowledge,
human and divine. What a busy fellow!
With such a pedigree, it’s no wonder Thoth is
selected as the graphic theme for InfoSol’s Business Intelligence Seminar
(IBIS), InfoSol’s annual conference.
The Valley of Solutions served
as the center of all activity, outside of the IBIS seminars and workshops,
where attendees were able to explore and see demonstrations of the latest
Business Intelligence technologies from InfoSol and its leading partners,
including SAP. A number of oases were available to quench each attendee’s
thirst for information.
Paul Grill’s opening remarks on Monday set the
stage for the conference. As President and CEO of InfoSol, Paul invited
Santiago Becerra, original founder of Infommersion, the company that created
Xcelsius, and now CEO of MeLLmo, to assist in recognizing three companies for
their efforts with awards in the following categories:
• Innovative Dashboard - awarded to SPX Service Solutions
• Best Business Dashboard - awarded to The Waldinger Corporation
• Most Valuable Dashboard - awarded to BP Alaska
This year, IBIS offered two executive tracks that
focused on the many decisions that affect building and deploying BI solutions,
plus seminar tracks on “Dashboard Deployment,” “BOE Administration,” and
“Advanced Crystal Reports.” Four hands-on tracks completed the program,
providing more in-depth training on “Xcelsius Dashboards,” “Crystal Reports
2008,” “Web Intelligence XI 3.0,” and “Data Integrator.”
IBIS 2009 attendees were anxious to hear customer
case studies, presented by SPX Service Solutions, Newmont Mining, and Meritage
Homes. Each of the case studies highlighted how Business Intelligence is
deployed at the named site, and brought home the human element in each of the
implementations.
SAP’s François Imberton and Mani Gill addressed
IBIS 2009 attendees at the Tuesday morning keynote presentations focusing on
the future of dashboards and OnDemand Solutions.
SAP and InfoSol hosted two Hospitality Receptions in the Valley of Solutions
(exhibit area), where attendees were treated to good food, good conversation,
and demonstrations of current and new BI products and technologies.
If you weren’t among the attendees at IBIS 2009, we’re sorry you
missed the event. But, then, there’s always next year!

Xcelsius Q&A
QUESTION:
Not all selectors have the option of using Filtered Rows as an
insertion type, and chart drill down does not have filtered rows as an option
for insertion type. How can I use filtered rows to drill down from one chart
into another when the filtered rows insertion type is not available on the drop
down list?
ANSWER:
To achieve the
functionality of filtered rows when it is not an insertion type, we can hide a
selector in the background that uses filtered rows and is tied to the output of
our initial selector. For example, I have the following data set of tabular
data as shown in Figure 1.

Crystal Reports Q&A
QUESTION:
I have a parameter that takes multiple values as input, however, when
I drop the parameter onto my report it displays only one value. How can I
display all the values of the parameter?
ANSWER:
1. Create a formula
2. Use a join function on the parameter
3. If the parameter is a data range, then use “Min” and “Max” in separate
formulas to display them
