Chaperone
InfoSol Starts Healthcare BI Initiative with Chaperone RFID Solution
Chaperone, developed by InfoSol partner Mantic Point in the U.K., is an
application that combines Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and
Business Intelligence to automatically track and analyze the movement of mobile
medical equipment in hospitals.
RFID tags, which emit radio frequency signals, are attached to mobile equipment
such as ECG’s, Infusion Pumps, Wheelchairs, etc., and RFID readers are placed
between different zones (e.g., a ward, corridor, or entrance), to track their
movements. When a tagged mobile asset moves between zones, the reader detects
the tag and Chaperone updates its location in the database.

Chaperone provides simple browser based screens for hospital staff to quickly
locate mobile medical equipment.
When hospital staff need to find a piece of equipment, they can go to the
nearest PC and use the intuitive browser based search function of Chaperone to
find it.
Chaperone also maintains a complete audit trail of all equipment movements,
allowing hospital administrators and managers to analyze this information over
a period of time. Using Business Intelligence tools, like BusinessObjects, Web
Intelligence and Dashboard Manager, it is possible to track trends and identify
shortages or surpluses of equipment in certain areas, as well as implement
effective risk management controls.

A BusinessObjects Dashboard is used to track medical equipment movements over a
period of time, as well as provide risk management alerts and information.
Such controls might be ensuring certain medical devices are only used on wards
where staff have been properly trained in their correct use, or quickly
tracking down equipment used in a contaminated area and placing it in
quarantine.
The combined benefits of improving quality, lowering cost, and reducing risk in
hospitals makes Chaperone a very compelling solution for the healthcare
industry.

Chaperone provides a graphical presentation of the monitored area in the
hospital to make it easier to locate where vital mobile medical equipment can
be found.
Recent independent studies have shown that a typical hospital cannot locate 15%
to 20% of its mobile medical equipment at any given time. In addition, other
studies show that the time spent searching for missing medical equipment
equates to over $1,800 of cost for every nurse each year.
The BusinessObjects reports and dashboards for Chaperone are completely
customizable to meet the specific needs of each hospital.
