BusinessObjects Then and Now

On a recent trip to Egypt, I visited several of the places I had originally visited when I first went there 35 years ago.

While I miss some of the nostalgia and adventure of climbing over rocks and crawling through tunnels in tombs in the dark, I am excited that I can see and do so much more than I could 35 years ago.

Egypt, along with other governments and institutions around the world, has invested heavily in both preserving and restoring its ancient past.

It has built amazing new museums to showcase its best treasures, it has restored the avenue of sphinxes between Karnak and Luxor temples, and it continues to restore and open new tombs and temples to the public.

I try to go there at least once a year as there is always something new to see and discover.

I feel that BusinessObjects is like that also. I have worked with it for over 30 years and yet there is always something new and exciting to discover.

Thirty years ago, people were using BusinessObjects to quickly create operational reports with drag and drop actions. The power of the semantic layer allowed them to use simple business terms and automatically generate the SQL so non-programmers could create their own reports.

Since then, the product has gone on to take advantage of improved visualization and analysis capabilities so you can develop full blown Business Intelligence dashboards and allow users to manipulate data in new ways.

However, its strength remains its unrivalled reporting and data abstract capabilities. There is not another Business Intelligence tool in the market that can match this.

As I have blogged about many times before, this is the reason why BusinessObjects both lives on and thrives.

And, just like governments and institutions that continue to invest in Ancient Egypt, SAP, InfoSol and others continue to invest in BusinessObjects.

SAP’s investment is evident from it’s 10-year+ roadmap and all the new features and functionalities that we continue to see with each new version.

InfoSol’s investment is evident from The BusinessObjects community it continues to nurture and grow through its SpeakBO PLUS, Regional BusinessObjects User Group Meetings and annual IBIS conference,

To celebrate this, the theme of the next IBIS BusinessObjects conference, IBIS 2025, will be “Then and Now” and will highlight how BusinessObjects continues to be used both the way it was 30 years ago and now.

Do you remember the first time you used BusinessObjects?

Do you still use it the same way now?

What is it that you love so much about using it?

What have you done with BusinessObjects that you are most proud of?

As we open the Call for Papers for IBIS 2025, we are looking for submissions that will talk about BusinessObjects then, now and both.

There will be three parallel tracks with 15 sessions each over a period of 3 days in addition to opening keynote sessions each day that have become a hallmark of IBIS.

The three tracks will be :

Excelling with BusinessObjects where you can share your BusinessObjects tips, advice and best practices – both old and new.

Creative BusinessObjects Case Studies where we will showcase your innovative solutions with BusinessObjects.

BI Strategy and Future Direction where we can discuss trends and what’s coming next in the world of Business Intelligence.

Details on submitting a presentation can be found here.

Traditionally at least half the presentations at IBIS are delivered by customers which is part of what makes it such a compelling and collaborative event. Many of the presenters have worked with BusinessObjects for more than 20 years and have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share.

Just like my annual trips to Egypt, there is always something new and exciting to discover and IBIS 2025 promises to have plenty of great first-time content with the new release of BI 2025.

See you there!
