This blog is aimed at Xcelsius users who want to migrate their .xlfs into Squirrel.
To everyone else — don’t let this put you off, it’s still an interesting read and you might pick up a few hints and tips along the way.
The first thing to know is
Our users told us that if we can migrate even 50-80% of their dashboard, that would be a great starting point.
So, we set ourselves a stretch-target of offering migration for 80% of the components (excluding maps).
What does a successful migration mean?
It means we can translate the component in your .xlf into our Squirrel equivalent, bringing across and mapping as many properties as possible.
So, for some really simple dashboards, migration is pretty straightforward. But the reality for many Xcelsius users is that migration looks more like this:

The purpose of this blog is to show you what’s involved in fixing-up the squirrel project (your migrated dashboard) to make it look and behave like the original .xlf. It will demonstrate how you can save yourself many man-hours of effort as opposed to building it from scratch.

In a nutshell…
It’s really simple to fix up your project! Here is a quick summary of what you can expect but should you want tutorial-type instructions, watch our video Migration — what to expect.
So… you’ve migrated your dashboard into Squirrel and it looks OK, but you’ve gone into Preview mode and some things are out of alignment, formatting is a bit off. There’s no need to panic!
Most things can be put back by selecting the relevant component in the Object Browser and using the Properties Panel to re-format styling and positioning:
- Check for and remove components that could not migrate
- If your background image (or other images) have disappeared, import them in again from their original source
- Use the Properties Panel to fix-up any wonky button styling
- Re-format image components if the sizing has gone askew
- Tidy up shapes and lines that have moved out of position
- Fix Number Formatting if it hasn’t carried over properly
- Use HTML to format text if required.
Summary
By following these simple steps, you will see how 15-20 minutes of re-formatting gets your dashboard looking like it did before it was migrated. It really doesn’t take long and it’s much quicker than building it from scratch which could take hours or even days.
