Occasionally, a release comes along that can almost be too exciting to wait and share. Yellowfin 7.1 is bringing about great improvements to the user interface, system management, ease of use for all system roles, and chart customization options. In what is still considered a beta release, Yellowfin 7.1 reflects the following much anticipated, enhancements:
Convenient & Customizable Visualizations
First introduced in Yellowfin 7, the user friendly automatic chart functionality gave developers the ability to quickly visualize a report without spending a lot of time selecting the chart type. Yellowfin automatically selects the best chart dependent on the data set in a report. Developers still had the ability to swap the chart selection and perform slight customization to the look and feel. However 7.1 takes another step in a customization direction. Report Developers not only have the convenience of using the automatic chart functionality, however now there are more chart options for your report data and enhancements to the stylizing of each chart. A user can now assign colors based on a metric value, compare multiple metrics on one axis by creating splits in chart coloring, and add additional colors to the auto chart using metric values, conditional formatting, and reference codes.
Location Intelligence
Release 7.1 introduces a brand new concept to Yellowfin customers. A Geo-Pack Management Tool will no longer require users to create or contain location data elements in a data source in order to develop a Yellow map. Yellowfin will now provide downloadable XML packs that will contain points, polygons, and dimensional data to link directly to existing fields providing context to an intended location. Prior to this, Yellowfin users would have to manipulate the data in the database or data warehouse in order to deliver recognizable location elements for the Yellowfin map types. Now, with the downloadable geo-packs, a user will be able to match a field to an existing location element to create a map utilizing a linked data field. For already existing Yellowfin customers, the process appears no different than swapping a metric to a dimension in the Yellowfin view with the added step of matching the field to a location element in the geo-pack.
Spreadsheets & CSV imports
Previously there were few options for a report developer in Yellowfin to customize and manipulate a CSV import in the report builder. Now introduced in release 7.1, the same role can add calculated fields, format columns and create drill hierarchies directly from the report builder without access to the underlying meta-data. Best of all, a non-administrative developer can use data parsing to convert either text based dates or timestamps into Yellowfin readable date fields. This is a huge improvement for report customization and developer accessibility to the solution.
